My obsession with pallet furniture continues (and I have successfully dragged my husband into the obsession with me!). I saw this idea on Pinterest:
Nate grabbed a half pallet from the side of his work and we got to work.
NOTE: ***Before selecting your pallet, make sure that you are aware of how the pallet was treated in order to make sure it is safe for your house. All pallets should be marked with a code that lets you know how it has been treated.
-Heat treatment (HT) (SAFEST OPTION FOR USE IN YOUR HOME)
-Methyl bromide fumigation (MB)
-Chemical pressure impregnation (CPI)
It is also very important to make sure that the pallet is free of insects. Make sure the wood is in good condition and does not splinter easy.

He then took an extra board off of the pallet and added it to the back of the wine rack.
He took a second extra board and attached it to the bottom of the rack to hold the wine bottles up.
He then went through and secured each attachment with wood screws. Similar to how we finished the pallet coffee table, we sanded the wood with a very fine sandpaper then stained it with some leftover stain we had in the garage. We finished the wine rack with a few layers of polyurethane.

How did you attach this to the wall? I've been thinking about making one of these since I saw it, but I'm unsure as to how to put something that heavy on the wall without it falling (because, of course, I'd cry if all my wine broke!) ;)

ReplyDeleteHI! Because of the weight of the bottles, we decided to screw directly into the studs. If you don't plan to hang things as heavy as wine bottles, you could use a picture hanging kit with wire but I would be worried about how stable it would stay. I hope this helps. :)
DeletePallet projects are great and all, but you have to be careful. Many pallets are treated with chemicals and should not be used indoors. Some are heat treated and are fine to use. There is a labeling code which identifies either way. Also, you will want to make sure that the pallet is in good shape and is not harboring any pests or molds.

Hi Sarah! I am so glad you made one of these! We ended up drilling holes through the rack and screwing it directly into the studs in the wall. That way we would feel comfortable putting heavy items on it.

ReplyDeleteHi, I love this idea and have been considering something along these lines for my hubby's collection of empty bottles that he hasn't used yet. The only thing that concerns me is that the full bottles are not being stored properly. To store wine properly the wine should be touching the cork. Great idea though! Thanks for the inspiration.
ReplyDeleteIf you have a dozen bottles, ready for drinking within a month or two, then all you may need is a wine rack that sits on the floor in a closet somewhere on the north side of the house.

Tough this rack design is very simple and traditional but believe me it is the most popular design and I see pallet design every where.
